Five-time Argentinian Surf champ, Martin Passeri was once again favourite to win this contest and had had months of preparation. However, as his opponents took to the waves, Passeri stopped on the sand to everyones confusion.
Paused, the pro stopped next to Nicolas Gallegos, who had been paralysed at 18 ending his surfing dream..who sat in his wheelchair on the sand.
It was the middle of the heat and Martin Passeri touched Gallegos’s shoulder and offered to take him out to catch his first wave which ended in disqualification..
“I believe that was the best wave,” he said, “and the biggest triumph of my life.”
